Here's an update on CropScape from John-

Although Cropspace uses federal government data, this apparent fugitive is not a government publication. Here's the GPO reply:

"We appreciate your suggestion that Cropspace be added to the FDLP and be assigned a SuDoc classification number. However, our research shows that this publication is a product of a George Mason researcher, and therefore does not fit our scope requirements."

Customer (John Stevenson) - 10/24/2011 09:56 AM
Cropspace is a product of George Mason researchers and the USDA's
National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS) The URL is http://nassgeodata.gmu.edu/CropScape/

Might this be classed A 92.2: with GPO item no. 0122-A-07?

“The program, which uses information from NASS’s Cropland Data Layer and the GeoBrain geospatial information system designed by Mason, allows users to examine any area of the United States for a breakdown of crops. The system is searchable by region, state or county, and is updated annually. Archives date back to 1997.”

New Lost Document

There is a new poster from USGS that they were giving away for free at the Geological Society of America meeting. Hopefully you can get them for distribution through the FDLP. It is titled: Bicentennial of the 1811-1812 New Madrid Earthquake sequence, December 2011- February 1212. There is an OCLC record for it (700524962). It is presently owned by the two USGS Libraries (although since I picked up a copy, WIU will own it soon too). URL: http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/118/

However, it would be great if this was issued to depositories in the midwest in HARD COPY!!

Dear Ms. Wilson
Inaugural Semiannual Report to the Congress was not distributed through the Depository Library Programs. Since you only received the cover, it was being used to protect the publications from being damaged during transport. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you for using askGPO and for your continued support of the Federal Depository Library Program. If you need additional assistance, please feel free to contact us again.

Hello,

I just found this new USDA Publication on the USDA web site (and promptly reported it to AskGPO as a Lost Doc):

Atlas of Rural and Small-Town America

URL: http://www.ers.usda.gov/data/ruralatlas/

Interesting interactive mapping site. I am also adding it to our U.S. Online Atlases site at: http://www.wiu.edu/library/govpubs/maps/maps_web.sphp?id=123

Good Morning Jennie Burroughs

We were able to acquire a tangible copy of USGS Professional Paper 1700
and will distribute copies to the libraries. As stated earlier the
Professional Papers series is normally distributed in electronic format.
This particular issue was only distributed in paper format. All future
issues of this series we plan to distribute electronically. Please
allow two-three weeks for delivery.

Thank you for using askGPO and for your continued support of the Federal
Depository Library Program. If you need additional assistance, please
feel free to contact us again.

Response (GMURPHY) - 09/17/2010 09:17 AM
Hello Jennie Burroughs

The Professional Papers series is normally distributed in electronic
format. So far, the agency does not have an electronic version
available on its web-site. However I will check with the agency to find
out if they plan to distribute it electronically in the future. I will
also investigate if tangible copies are available for distribution.

Thank you for using askGPO and for your continued support of the Federal
Depository Library Program. If you need additional assistance, please
feel free to contact us again.

Customer (Jennie Burroughs) - 09/16/2010 03:59 PM
This looks like a fugitive publication to me. A patron was asking
whether or not we had USGS Professional Paper 1700, Stratigraphic
studies in southwestern Montana and adjacent Idaho--lower Tertiary
Anaconda Conglomerate and Mesoproterozoic Gunsight Formation. I was
surprised to find that this 2005 publication was unavailable. It's part
of an established series, it's an agency that GPO works with
frequently--so it seems like a clear in-scope depository item to me.
It's strange what falls through the cracks.

Here's the information from the USGS Publications Warehouse:
http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/pp1700

Why wasn't this printed and distributed, or why is it still not
available digitally? Can depositories get access to this?

Hello Jennie Burroughs

The Professional Papers series is normally distributed in electronic
format. So far, the agency does not have an electronic version
available on its web-site. However I will check with the agency to find
out if they plan to distribute it electronically in the future. I will
also investigate if tangible copies are available for distribution.

Customer (Jennie Burroughs) – 09/16/2010 03:59 PM
This looks like a fugitive publication to me. A patron was asking
whether or not we had USGS Professional Paper 1700, Stratigraphic
studies in southwestern Montana and adjacent Idaho–lower Tertiary
Anaconda Conglomerate and Mesoproterozoic Gunsight Formation. I was
surprised to find that this 2005 publication was unavailable. It’s part
of an established series, it’s an agency that GPO works with
frequently–so it seems like a clear in-scope depository item to me.
It’s strange what falls through the cracks.

Here’s the information from the USGS Publications Warehouse:
http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/pp1700

Why wasn’t this printed and distributed, or why is it still not
available digitally? Can depositories get access to this?
